The City of High Point is here to serve you. To help you maintain a clean environment, the City provides once-a-week same-day collection for your garbage, yard waste, bulk trash, and recyclables.
This information was prepared to help you use these services and to answer questions you might have about them.
HOUSEHOLD GARBAGE
- Household garbage is picked up once a week. (See map for your collection day.)
- You must use a City-approved roll-out garbage cart.
- Solid waste collection begins at 7:00 a.m.. Rollout containers which are not out when the truck passes, will not be collected until the next regularly scheduled pickup day.
- To buy a garbage cart:
- bring $57 to the Collections office at City Hall, 211 S. Hamilton St., or
- mail a check to P. O. Box 230, High Point, NC 27261.
- Specify that you want a garbage cart and include your street address so that we can deliver it to your home.
- If your cart won't hold all your garbage, you may purchase a second cart or put the overflow in thick plastic bags or cardboard boxes.
- Do not use garbage cans or waste-baskets. They will be discarded if placed at the curb with your cart.
- Paint cans will be picked up only if they are empty or if the paint is completely dry.
- To dry paint, leave paint cans open for several days.
- Take oil-based paints to a collection site. We cannot pick them up in your household garbage.
- If your cart becomes damaged, the Environmental Services Division will try to repair it for free.
- Wash out your cart and leave it at the curb. Call 883-3111 and let us know that you want us to try to repair your cart.
- If it can't be repaired, you will need to buy a new cart.
Back Door Service
Back door service is available on a once a week basis, provided that prior approval has been granted by the environmental services superintendent, who will require a valid medical verification for those persons who are unable to roll their rollout container to the curb. The city shall reserve the right to periodically verify the need to continue physically disabled services to residents that have been approved to receive such services. The city shall reserve the right to continue or discontinue service.

YARD WASTE
- Grass clippings, leaves, limbs, and brush are picked up from your home once a week on your regular collection day.
- Put leaves and clippings in paper bags, clear plastic bags, strong cardboard boxes, or a black yard waste cart.
- Limbs and brush must be bundled in lengths of four feet or less, weighing not more than 50 pounds.
- Yard waste collection begins at 7:00 a.m.. Rollout containers which are not out when the truck passes, will not be collected until the next regularly scheduled pickup day.
- Storm debris may be picked up on a specially-announced schedule.
- If you'd rather use a roll-out cart for yard waste, you can buy one for $57.
- Bring your check to the Collections office at City Hall, 211 S. Hamilton St., or
- mail a check to P.O. Box 230, High Point, NC 27261.
- Specify that you want a yard waste cart and include your street address so that we can deliver the cart to your home.
- You may dispose of your yard waste for free at the City's composting yard, 3001 Ingleside Dr.
- Commercial customers and commercial-type vehicles will be charged.

Ingleside Compost facility 883-8514
Mon.-Fri., 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. - Compost and mulch are avail-able for sale at the composting yard.
- Mulch costs $17.00 a ton; compost is $22.00 a ton. We will load your vehicle. Minimum purchase of $5.00. We cannot deliver.
- Loose leaves will be collected for a 10-week period during the fall.
You must rake your leaves to the street behind the curb. Do not put your loose leaves in the street.
- If you live on a street without curb and gutter, place loose leaves on your side of the ditch.
- Keep rocks, sticks, and other debris out of your leaves.
- Newspaper, television, radio and Cablevision Channel 8 announcements of the loose leaf collection schedule will be made.
- Christmas trees may be placed at the curb on your regular collection day. Remove all decorations, tinsel, lights, and stand.
BULK TRASH PICK-UP
- Bulky items, such as mattresses and appliances, will be picked up the same day as your garbage, yard waste, and recyclables.
- Bulk items collection begins at 7:00 a.m.. Items which are not out when the truck passes, will not be collected until the next regularly scheduled pickup day.
- Do not put limbs and other yard waste in the same pile as your bulky items.
- Please place bulky items at the curb by 7 a. m. on your collection day.
- We will pick up a maximum of five tires for a fee of $1.25 per tire.
LANDFILL 
- You may haul your bulk trash to the City landfill and pay a disposal fee of $36 per ton.
- Minimum charge is:
$10 - large trucks
$5 - pick-up trucks
$5 - trailers
$2 - cars - Hours are:
Mon.-Fri., 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. (Saturday hours are for residents with bagged waste only. Private haulers cannot be served on Saturdays.) - Convenience Center is located at the front so residents do not have to enter the landfill.
RENT-A-TRAILER
- Residential use only.
- For major clean-up projects, you may rent a trash trailer for $50.
- We will deliver it. You load it. We will haul it away.
- DO NOTput these items in the trailer.

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE
- Certain household wastes are not accepted in your roll-out cart, be-cause they can be hazardous to our environment and our collection workers.
- Such items include:
Antifreeze - Brake fluid - Car batteries - Drain cleaners
Paint (all kinds) - Paint stripper - Paint thinner - Pesticides
Gasoline - Insect spray - Lighter fluid - Motor oil - Oven cleaners
Pool chemicals - Rat poison - Solvents - Transmission fluid - Weed killer
These items may be taken to a household hazardous waste collection center.
Guilford County residents may use the collection center located at 2750 Patterson Avenue, Greensboro. Call them at 373-2196.
Hours are:
Wed. -Fri., 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Saturday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
DEAD ANIMAL PICK-UP
- Dead animals will be picked up at the curb. Please call 883-3111 to request a pick-up.
- It shall be unlawful to place dead animals at curbside prior to scheduling for collection by city force. A request for this service shall be made to the Customer Service division for scheduling the collection of the dead animal. This service is provided five days a week during normal business hours. When practical, the bodies should be placed in front of the premises upon the grass strip between the street and sidewalk. Dead animals weighing in excess of 100 pounds shall be removed by their owner. Dead animals already in a street or on the edge of the street, when the owner is not identified, will be scheduled for collection by the city upon notification of their existence.
MEDICAL WASTE
- Needles and syringes should be placed in a Sharps puncture-proof container, which is available at most pharmacies. When the container is full, call 883-3111 for a special pick-up.
COLLECTION SCHEDULE
- All waste and recyclables are scheduled to be picked up on the same day.
- Collection schedules may be adjusted during the following holidays:
- New Year's Day
- Martin Luther King Day
- Good Friday
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving
- Christmas
- Newspaper, television and radio announcements of the schedule changes will be made. Also, the collection schedule will be shown on Cable Channel 8.
- During extreme weather conditions, collection schedules may be modified.
