The Roy B. Culler, Jr. Senior Center is an 11,500 square foot facility that began operation in May of 1991. Approved as part of the 1986 Bond Referendum, the Center is intended to serve the needs of High Point's large and growing population adults age 50 and older. The Center is named for former High Point Mayor, Roy B. Culler, Jr., who was instrumental in it's development.

The Center is certified by the State of North Carolina as a Center of Excellence.

The Center offers a variety of programs and activities. Types of programs and classes to watch for include exercise, arts and crafts, movies, guest speakers, health screenings, club meetings, parties, holiday celebrations, cultural events, entertainment and much more.   The Center offers a variety of trips that include tours, theatre, sight seeing and more.  Simply click on the link below to view all our trips, two-month calendar of events or newsletter.

The Senior Center houses a game room, space for crafts, activities, a craft shop, and multi-purpose meeting rooms. The offices of the Senior Resources of Guilford are also located at the center. A local farmer's market operates in the center's parking lot May through October on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.

Volunteers are key to the success of the Center. Some of the areas where volunteers are needed most include program or class leaders, assistants leaders, craft shop attendants, health screening personnel, receptionists and information and referral desk attendants.

The Center is open Monday-Friday from 9:00am-5:00pm, evenings and weekends when programs are scheduled and other times by appointment.

Some areas of the Senior Center may be rented for private functions by contacting the Center Director.

Cars have changed. So have the traffic rules, driving conditions and the roads you travel every day. Some drivers age 50+ have never looked back since they got their first driver's licenses, but even the most experienced drivers benefit from brushing up on their driving skills. This is a safety class sponsored by AARP. Check with your insurance company; some companies reduce premiums after taking this course.

The Senior Center is a "Be Counted" center for the US Census Bureau. You can get questionnaire assistance if you don't understand how to complete the form you receive in the mail, need language assistance, have Census questions or if you did not receive a Census form you can pick one up.

Bingo

Come out and play Bingo every Wednesday. You play 2 cards for 2 hours. There are a variety of Bingo games. Prizes include small household items and foods. The Bingo group is looking for prizes; if you want to donate call the Center at 883-3584.

Blood Pressure Screenings

9:30-11a.m.  Free blood pressure checks on each Monday of the month, except 5th Monday. Blood Pressure is checked on a drop in basis. Forms are provided to track weekly readings. Screenings will not be done on holidays when the Senior Center is closed.

Team sports are a lot of fun. They provide opportunity for fellowship and fitness. If you are interested in participating on a team sport for softball or basketball, you are invited to attend this breakfast. We will discuss playing for fun or playing for competition. You will learn the rules that have been adjusted for seniors to play more easily. If you played in the past and want to play again or just now finding the time to play on a team, you will want to attend. You must be age 55 or better to participate. Participants will be divided into age groups so that those in their 50's, 60's, 70's or 80's are appropriately matched. Please RSVP by February 8. Team sports are for both men and women.

Bridge - Social

Join us at Deep River Recreation Center for a healthy lunch with fun, friends and fitness. There will be a variety of leisure activities that promote fitness for those age 55 and better. After lunch you can walk, shoot basketball, play chair volleyball or shuffle board. You will learn about Senior Games, a year-round health and fitness program. You must pre-register for lunch by call 883-3584 by 12p.m. the day before each fitness day. If you do not plan to eat lunch with us, you do not have to pre-register. Walk-ins are welcome for the fitness program.

We will see "Joseph" at the Sight and Sound Millennium Theatre, one of the world's largest live performance stages. Joseph's story of forgiveness and integrity has made this Bible story a timeless truth, inspiring generations of men and women to walk uprightly in the midst of great temptation. We will also visit "The Amish Experience", where you will see an Amish Country Homestead and see the movie "Jacob's Choice", then see the "Psalms of David" at the Living Waters Theatre. $75.00 deposit is due upon registering. 1-4p.m.  Diane Brady with Legal Aid of North Carolina meets with seniors by appointment only. Diane assists in providing simple wills, power of attorney and health care power of attorney. This is a free service provided to seniors and their family. Appointments can be made by calling 885-9181 and press *302.

Line Dancing

Various line dances are taught that includes a lot of movement and exercise. The class is open to anyone with some line dancing experience. The class also has performances periodically at various nursing and retirement homes.

Operation "In As Much"

Green Street Baptist Church is sponsoring the program "In As Much". This is a community project done by volunteers. Projects are small home repairs, fix it projects, house chores, yard work or other tasks that are needed. Person should be elderly, handicapped and not able to pay for or have the work done. You can call the Senior Center at 883-3584 to request service. All requests must be made by April 1 with work being done on May 1.

The Senior Center has partnered with the YWCA on Gatewood Avenue to provide Water Exercise. You do not have to be a member of the YWCA if you are a participant from the Senior Center. Join the fun and fellowship with a great way to exercise without getting your hair wet. Water exercise can increase strength and endurance, improve range of motion and help balance and flexibility. The monthly fee should be made payable to the YWCA.
