Special Populations/Special Olympics

The Special Populations section of the Recreation Division provides year round recreational and leisure opportunities for children and adults with disabilities. Programs include field trips, community integration outings, Lucky Strikes bowling league, holiday parties, as well as Camp Ann and Special Olympics.

Camp Ann is a summer day camp program for school age children and adults with developmental disabilities located at High Point City Lake Park in Jamestown.  The program began as a 2-week program in 1966 with a matching grant from the Joseph P. Kennedy Foundation. The City of High Point has continued to sponsor the program with support of numerous civic sponsors.

Special Olympics Guilford/High Point is a year round sports training and competition organization for athletes 8 years of age and older with intellectual disabilities. The High Point program offers the following sports: Alpine Skiing, Aquatics, Athletics (track and field), Basketball, Bocce, Bowling, Cycling, Golf, Power Lifting, Soccer, Softball, Tennis and Volleyball. Athletes must have a current medical/participation form on file, as well as a current Parent/Guardian Release form.

A Day at the Dixie Classic Fair - Special Populations Wednesday October 6, 2010 9a.m.-3:30p.m.  Fee:Cost of Lunch and Souvenirs Deadline for enrollment: 10/01/10 This is a program for people with disabilities to go out in the community and have a good time while socializing with other members of the community. This is Special Populations day at the Dixie Classic Fair and there is no admission fee. We will meet at Morehead Recreation Center at 9a.m. The Dixie Classic Fair is held at the Fairgrounds at the Winston-Salem Coliseum Complex. Call Stephanie at 883-3477 for more information.

Bowling for the Visually Impaired - Special Populations Friday September 10, 2010 - April 23, 2011 9-11a.m.  Fee:$1.15 per game Instructor: Jeff Caudill A morning bowling program for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Special bowling equipment and limited transportation is provided. Program will run through April 23, 2010, except on Holidays. Please call Jeff at 883-3477 for more information.

Breakfast Club for the Visually Impaired - Special Populations Monday September 13, 2010 October 4, 2010 10a.m.  Fee:Cost of Meal + Tip Instructor: Jeff Caudill A program for individuals who are visually impaired to socialize and enjoy a morning breakfast out. Limited transportation is provided. We are always looking for new participants! Please call Jeff at 883-3477 for more information. Schedule is as follows: September 13 - Becky's in High Point; October 4 - Breakfast and Shopping at the Triad Farmer's Market.

Camp Ann - Special Populations Monday-Friday 9a.m.-3p.m.  Fee:$35.00/resident; $50.00/non-resident - per weekly session Deadline for enrollment: 2 weeks before session begins Summer day camp for ages 6 and older of all disabilities. There will be arts & crafts, swimming, outdoor recreation and field trips. Lunch and one snack will be provided. Session dates: Elementary: June 21-25, June 28-July2, July 12-16; Middle/High School: July 19-23, July 26-30; Adult: June 14-18, August 2-6. Camp Ann is located at City Lake Park.

Community Recreation/Education Exploration Class - Special Populations Wednesday August 18, 2010 - December 15, 2010 10-11a.m.  Instructor: Jeff Caudill A weekly program for adults with disabilities to explore activities throughout the community. Cooking Class - Special Populations Thursday September 9, 2010 September 16, 2010 September 23, 2010 September 30, 2010 October 7, 2010 October 14, 2010 October 21, 2010 11a.m.-12:30p.m.  Fee:$5.00 per person/per class Instructor: Stephanie Hedgecock This is a 7-week class to help people with disabilities learn basic, quick cooking skills and etiquette. We will prepare and enjoy meals during each class. Please call Stephanie Hedgecock at 883-3477 to register 1 week prior to each class. Classes will be held at Washington Terrace Park.

Cookout and Swim Party - Special Populations Wednesday August 11, 2010 5:30-8p.m.  For people with and without disabilities. The cookout begins at 5:30p.m., swimming will be from 6:30-8p.m. Event will be held at City Lake Park.

Halloween Dance - Special Populations Friday October 22, 2010 6:30-8:30p.m.  A Halloween dance for people with and without disabilities. Costumes are welcomed, but not required. Please call 883-3477 or 883-3481 for more information. Dance will be held at Morehead Recreation Center.

Lucky Strikes Bowling League - Special Populations Saturday August 7, 2010 August 14, 2010 August 28, 2010 September 11, 2010 September 18, 2010 September 25, 2010 October 2, 2010 October 16, 2010 12:45-3p.m.  Fee:$3.00 per week/per person for two games Instructor: Tom Burke A bowling league for people with and without disabilities. Bowlers are grouped according to ability level and follow regular league rules. Bumpers and ramps are available for those that need them. Event is held at Tarheel Bowling Lanes at 2617 N. Main Street. Additional dates: October 23 & 30.

Maize Adventure Trip - Special Populations This is an opportunity for people with disabilities to be able to go through a corn maize, do some gem mining and go to the pumpkin patch and pick out a pumpkin to take home and decorate. Please call Stephanie at 883-3477 for more information.

Movie Day - Special Populations Tuesday August 24, 2010 Deadline for enrollment: 8/17/10 Instructor: Stephanie Hedgecock This program is for people with disabilities to go out into the community, socialize and have a good time. We will be going to the Carmike 18 on Koger Boulevard in Greensboro. Please call Stephanie at 883-3477 for details about the movie time, fees and when we will be leaving.

Must attend practices and a qualifier to be eligible for consideration for advancement to state competition. Practice will be held through November 1 at Morehead Recreation Center.

Special Olympics Guilford/High Point Bowling Competition - Special Populations Tuesday & Thursday November 16, 2010 November 18, 2010 9a.m.-1:30p.m.  This competition if for local athletes. Some athletes may advance to area and state competition. Lunch will be provided for all athletes, teachers and coaches. November 16 - Elementary; November 18 - Middle School/High School/Adult. Special Olympics Guilford/High Point Committee Meeting - Special Populations Tuesday August 17, 2010 September 21, 2010 October 19, 2010 6p.m.  A committee of volunteers, coaches, and athletes to help make decisions involving the business of Special Olympics High Point. Special Olympics Guilford/High Point Cycling Practice - Special Populations Tuesday & Thursday August 3, 2010 - November 2, 2010 6-8p.m.  Instructor: Mike Beeson Training for Special Olympics Athletes interested in cycling. Must attend practices and qualifier to be eligible for consideration for advancement to state competition. Training will be held through November 2 at Southwest Elementary School.

Special Olympics Guilford/High Point Roller Skating Practice - Special Populations Wednesday August 18, 2010 - November 3, 2010 5-6p.m.  Instructor: Stephanie Hedgecock Training for Special Olympics athletes interested in roller skating. Must train at least 8 weeks to be eligible for advancement to state level competition. Practice will be held through November 3 at Roll-A-Rink, 2421 N. Main Street.

Special Olympics Guilford/High Point Soccer Practice - Special Populations Monday August 9, 2010 - November 1, 2010 6-7p.m.  Instructor: Deborah Self Training for Special Olympics athletes interested in Soccer. Must attend practices and a qualifier to be eligible for consideration for advancement to state competition. Practice runs through November 1 at Morehead Recreation Center.

Special Olympics North Carolina Fall Tournament - Special Populations Saturday & Sunday November 6, 2010 - November 7, 2010 This is a statewide competition for Special Olympics athletes that qualify in cycling, roller staking, tennis and soccer. Super Social Supper Club - Special Populations Wednesday August 25, 2010 September 22, 2010 October 27, 2010 6-8p.m.  Fee:Cost of Meal + Tip A program for people with disabilities and their families to go out to eat and socialize with others. An experience to help with ordering food, paying the bill and making change for the tip. Bring your money! We will meet at the restaurant at 6:15p.m. Plan to be picked up at the restaurant by 8p.m. You must call 883-3481 or 883-3477 by the day of each event if you plan to attend. The Miracle League of High Point - Special Populations Friday, Saturday September 10, 2010 - September 11, 2010 September 18, 2010 September 25, 2010 October 2, 2010 October 9, 2010 October 16, 2010 October 23, 2010 October 29, 2010 - October 30, 2010 Fridays - 6-9p.m.; Saturdays - 9a.m.-2p.m.  The Miracle League of High Point is a baseball program providing athletes with physical and/or intellectual disabilities the chance to play baseball as a team member in an organized league. Our belief is that "Every Child Deserves a Chance to Play Baseball". We have a specially equipped "Field Of Dreams" adaptive baseball field that allows those utilizing wheelchairs and walkers the opportunity to move around the field without barriers. We are looking for players, coaches, buddies, general volunteers and fans for our spring season.
