Special Populations/Special Olympics
The Special Populations section of the Recreation Division provides year round recreational and leisure opportunities for children and adults with disabilities. Programs include field trips, community integration outings, Lucky Strikes bowling league, holiday parties, as well as Camp Ann and Special Olympics.
Camp Ann is a summer day camp program for school age children and adults with developmental disabilities located at High Point City Lake Park in Jamestown. The program began as a 2-week program in 1966 with a matching grant from the Joseph P. Kennedy Foundation. The City of High Point has continued to sponsor the program with support of numerous civic sponsors.
Special Olympics Guilford/High Point is a year round sports training and competition organization for athletes 8 years of age and older with intellectual disabilities. The High Point program offers the following sports: Alpine Skiing, Aquatics, Athletics (track and field), Basketball, Bocce, Bowling, Cycling, Golf, Power Lifting, Soccer, Softball, Tennis and Volleyball. Athletes must have a current medical/participation form on file, as well as a current Parent/Guardian Release form.

A Day at the Dixie Classic Fair - Special PopulationsWednesdayOctober 6, 2010 9a.m.-3:30p.m. Fee:Cost of Lunch and Souvenirs Deadline for enrollment: 10/01/10 This is a program for people with disabilities to go out in the community and have a good time while socializing with other members of the community. This is Special Populations day at the Dixie Classic Fair and there is no admission fee. We will meet at Morehead Recreation Center at 9a.m. The Dixie Classic Fair is held at the Fairgrounds at the Winston-Salem Coliseum Complex. Call Stephanie at 883-3477 for more information. |
Bowling for the Visually Impaired - Special PopulationsFridaySeptember 10, 2010 - April 23, 2011 9-11a.m. Fee:$1.15 per game Instructor: Jeff Caudill A morning bowling program for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Camp Ann - Special PopulationsMonday-Friday9a.m.-3p.m. Fee:$35.00/resident; $50.00/non-resident - per weekly session Deadline for enrollment: 2 weeks before session begins Summer day camp for ages 6 and older of all disabilities. There will be arts & crafts, swimming, outdoor recreation and field trips. Lunch and one snack will be provided. Session dates: Elementary: June 21-25, June 28-July2, July 12-16; Middle/High School: July 19-23, July 26-30; Adult: June 14-18, August 2-6. Camp Ann is located at City Lake Park. |

We have a specially equipped "Field Of Dreams" adaptive baseball field that allows those utilizing wheelchairs and walkers the opportunity to move around the field without barriers.
